3 Kinds of Spam

Spam, The most wonderful food on the earth. Next to hot dogs, it's really great to fry up on a sandwhich. Beloved as a food, but not so beloved in your email.

Let's talk about the 3 different kinds of spam.

1. Spam (The Food) (AI Generated)

Spam, the iconic canned meat product, has a fascinating history and cultural significance:

  • Created in 1937 by Hormel Foods Corporation
  • The name "Spam" is a combination of "spiced" and "ham"
  • During World War II, Spam became a crucial food source for troops and civilians
  • Hawaii consumes more Spam per capita than any other U.S. state
  • Spam is available in over 40 countries worldwide
  • The classic Spam ingredients are: pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite
  • Spam has become a cultural icon, inspiring the term "spam" for unwanted digital messages
  • The product has expanded to include various flavors like Teriyaki, Jalapeño, and Bacon
  • Spam is particularly popular in Asian cuisine, especially in South Korea and the Philippines

2. Spam (Email from a newsletter)

Today I got an email and marked it as spam. Also I tried to unsubscribe from sending me email. I've been getting these emails for years, but nothing works, I always get something from them.

This type of spam is when you sign up for a service or newsletter they usually send marketing emails.

I get so sick of these and just start marking them as spam. As much I try though I still get the emails. They are probably using a basic service that doesn't hand unsubscribing, or you have to go to their website to do it.

Either way these emails aren't that bad. I read some of them, but others I hit the spam button for sure.

3. Spam (Email from a bot) (AI Generated)

The most malicious form of spam comes from automated bots designed to send mass emails. This practice has evolved significantly over the years:

Early Email Spam

  • The first documented spam email was sent in 1978 by Gary Thuerk, marketing DEC computers
  • By the 1990s, spam became a major problem as email became more widespread
  • Early spammers used simple scripts to harvest email addresses from websites and forums

Common Email Scams

  1. Phishing Attempts

    • Fake emails pretending to be from banks or services
    • Attempt to steal login credentials or personal information
    • Often use urgent language to create panic
  2. Nigerian Prince Scams

    • Classic advance-fee fraud
    • Promise of large sums of money in exchange for small upfront payments
    • Still surprisingly effective despite being well-known
  3. Malware Distribution

    • Emails with malicious attachments
    • Links to compromised websites
    • Often disguised as legitimate documents or updates

DoS Attacks and Service Spamming

The term "spam" has also come to mean overwhelming a service with requests:

  • DDoS Attacks: Distributed Denial of Service attacks flood servers with traffic
  • Comment Spam: Automated bots posting links in comment sections
  • Form Spamming: Bots submitting forms repeatedly to overwhelm systems
  • API Abuse: Automated scripts making excessive API calls

Modern Spam Prevention

  • CAPTCHA systems to verify human users
  • Rate limiting to prevent excessive requests
  • Machine learning algorithms to detect suspicious patterns
  • IP blocking and blacklisting
  • Email authentication protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC)

Despite these measures, spam continues to evolve, with attackers constantly developing new techniques to bypass security measures. The battle between spammers and security professionals remains ongoing, with both sides adapting to new technologies and methods.
